Carbon fibre producer Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd has executed a share sales and purchase agreement under which it will acquire 51% of Wethje Holding GmbH, a German manufacturer of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) automotive parts.

Through this deal with Wethje’s parent company Cross Industries AG, Austria, Japan’s MRC is aiming to strengthen and expand its carbon fibre intermediate materials business in automobile applications in Europe.

Wethje, headquartered in Hengersberg, will become a consolidated subsidiary of MRC, subject to certain closing conditions.

MRC will utilise Wethje as a development and production base for CFRP parts. Wethje employs both autoclave technology on a small-scale automotive production and resin transfer moulding (RTM) for mid-scale serial production.
